Burns Night

I’m back from Oahu. Again. I flew over for the weekend. It was real nice. The weekend was packed full. When i got there I caught a bus to Gordon Biersch where I spend the next 5 hours. Oh how delicious. So they’ve done away with Dunkles and are ditching the Blonde Boch. Lucky for them they are replacing them with equally good beer. Otherwise they’d feel my wrath. Arrraarrrggg! Anyway. The weekend was fun. Saturday was Burns Night. It was good fun. I got to dance a full 4 step fling and dance 2 dances with the RSCDS. Then of course there is scotch and haggis. Lucky they had those, cause the dinner itself left some to be desired. Oh well. But it was nice. The bagpipes were wonderful. They filled the room with an amazing sound. So amazing that they made us close the door so the event upstairs could hear their conch shell. I love being scottish. The night ended and it was good. But before it ended they announced that the very next morning was going to be a meeting of a bunch of us scots to raise our glasses in a worldwide toast to Robert Burns. Not only that, but someone will be counting how many people are there to be sent in to Scotland to add it to a larger list of people who were toasting Robert Burns at that very moment in an attempt to set the world record for the largest worldwide toast. Very interesting. It was fun. I met some fun people. Good times.

Sunday passed fast. I flew back, hit Walmart and Safeway, then drove home. I finally arrived at home at 8pm. I was tired. I went to sleep. I missed my family. Oh happy day.

The Cardigan

I’m so close to being done with this cardigan wrap.I just have to sew in the ends and stitch together the sides. This thing has been about a year in the making. Well maybe more like 6 months. But that’s still a long time. I looks like it will be on the smaller size, which is ok, because it was started to be made for Holly before she got pregnant. So when she gets back to her target weight it will fit perfectly. And that is a good thing. I will be glad when it’s done. It was a fun project though. I think it ranks up there with the blanket I made for my dad. A little below the blanket anyway. Pictures to come when it is finished. Which should be soon.

Borack, screw tops, beer, guitar, dinner, and lemon bars

Today we have a new president. Leif woke up super early this morning. We laid in bed as long as we could get away with then got up. We popped on the boob toob and low and behold the inauguration was on. We stood and watched as Barack Obama nervously was sworn in. It gave me shivers. Then they played it over and over and over all day long.

My  neighbor brought me up a bag of empty beer bottles for me to use to bottle my beer. I didn’t have the heart to tell him that I couldn’t use any of them because they were screw top beers. And besides, I bottled my beer a week ago. As a matter of fact, I decided to pop one open tonight to see if I failed or not. As I popped the top, I heard a satisfying “psssst”. Awesome. So I then tasted it. It had a nice slight molasses flavor to it. Yum. I’ve succeeded in making my first batch of beer. Oh yeah. I think I can get used to this. I’m going to chill 6 of them and take them downstairs to my neighbors house along with my guitar and amp. He may have brought me screw top bottles, but he put forth an effort. And he plays guitar. That’s good enough for me. 🙂

Dinner was real good tonight. I’m not sure why. It was just really good. It was what I didn’t know I wanted. And to top it off, Holly made some lemon bars as well. Oh man. I don’t think today could have went any better.

G’night

A bit tired tonight. I had a lot to do today. Holly and Gavin were home from work and school. I of course had to work. I was able to get quite a bit done. But on top of work, I had some updates to the HSA website to make and was given a design to prepare for a t-shirt. I did a reasonable amount of work. We also got 2 loads of laundry done. Tomorrow is tuesday. My first batch of beer might be ready to chill and drink. I’m going to put one bottle in and test it in the evening. If it is ready, I’ll chill a few more bottles. I’m very excited.

Nothing special to report I suppose. We are all getting over our lingering cold. Mostly just sniffles now. Leif is much less grumpy. We sat today and watched a bunch of old videos of Gavin from when he was younger. There were some of him at the same age that Leif is now. He was oh so cute. It made me excited to see Leif grow up. Will he spend hours jumping over the edge of the carpet? Will he spend hours running around naked outside? One thing is for sure. He will be darn cute.

This coming weekend is Burn’s night. I’ve booked my tickets to fly over to Oahu. I’m getting in at 1 and won’t have a ride until around 4. What to do? Oh wait. I know. I’ll go to Gordon Biersch. 🙂 Hmmm. It almost seems planned. It will be a fast weekend. Friday will just zoom by. Saturday will be all about Burns night. And then I leave on Sunday at around noon. I look forward to it though. I went to a dance practice when I was there last weekend. It made me really miss dancing. I wish I had a group I could dance with on a weekly basis. I was lucky to have had one right near by in Bakersfield. Anyway, I need to get back to dancing somehow. I think it will help that I have passed the first test in getting my teaching certificate. It’s my foot in the door. And one step closer to Scotland.

I’m starting to get into that babbling, thinking-about-things-too-much stage. And that means I need to go to sleep. G’night.

What storm?

We’ve been sick. Gavin got sick at Granny’s house. I got sick when I went to go pick him up, Holly got sick from me when I got back, and Leif kind of picked up the leftovers. We were supposed to get slammed with this big storm yesterday. The gov. closed all schools and public libraries in Hawaii except for the big island. Naturally it was a beautiful day yesterday. Sunny all day long, not a drop of rain or a hint of wind. At least in Hana. The rest of Hawaii has got slammed I guess. Oh well. Too bad we weren’t well enough to go to the beach. 🙁 It was a good thing we all got to stay home yesterday. Good recovery time. Bleh.

In other news, as you can see, I’ve updated the theme of my blog. I got tired of the hobbit theme being so limited and green. Here’s a bit more color and better access to my profile and archives. I’ve been out of the loop for a bit, but I’ll try to get back into it more.
